2003 Winemaker's Selection Cabernet Sauvignon

2003 Winemaker's Selection Merlot

Both wines are exceptional. The Cabernet is a very complex, full bodied wine, with toasty, smoky overtones, rich fruitiness (black currant, cherry), and a long finish. The Merlot is slightly better (as is often the case in Argentina between the two varietals, unlike most of the rest of the world): supple, full bodied, richly flavored & smooth & long on the palate, with a persistent finish. It tastes of black cherry, toast, cooked beef, blueberry, and tobacco.

2003 Reserve Merlot

2003 Reserve Malbec

Impressive wines at the price. The Merlot is fleshy, full bodied, and quite complex in flavor, with rich fruitiness, modest tannin and evident oak. It tastes of black currant, cherry, toast, tobacco, and oak. The Malbec is very supple, full bodied, and well balanced; a stylish, lightly oaked Malbec, tasting of toast, black currant, cherry, and roasted nut.

2003 Winemaker's Selection Malbec
2003 Winemaker's Selection Cabernet Sauvignon

Both of these are knockouts. Big, plush and delicious, the Malbec is a textbook example of Argentina's mastery of this varietal. The lush Cabernet displays generous flavors of fig, baked cherry and chocolate supported by robust tannins on the finish. It has the complexity to accompany a classic roast of lamb or herb-rubbed roast pork.

Andeluna (Mendoza) Merlot Reserve 2003 ($22): A giant-killer at this price, as it tastes better than most $40 merlots from California. Deep, dark, rich and expressive, it features dark berry fruit with nuances of cocoa, herbs, toast and spices.

Andeluna (Mendoza) Malbec Winemaker's Selection 2003 ($12): Packed with dark fruit flavor and nicely accented with notes of smoke and spices, this is remarkably impressive for the price.
